Do they all have their own bedrooms? Mmm hmmm. Holly lives in my bedroom. When the former regular girlfriend, Tina, moved out, Holly let it be known that she wanted to be there.
So one is always in your bedroom? Yeah.
Do the girls get jealous of one another? For some, it’s just a lark. In today’s society, so much has to do with a feeling of identification with pop culture and the media and people in small towns all across the country watch things on television and they wish they were there or a part of that and part of this is all about that. And that also is a fascinating and very satisfying connection for me because I’m the kid who grew up in a very repressed home in the 1930s who looked back at the Roaring ’20s and F. Scott Fitzgerald and the flappers and the Jazz Age as the party I had missed. And I created that party and invited everyone else to party along with me.
This year-round summer camp for beautiful young women – with an 80-person staff instead of a few grizzled counselors, a grotto instead of a lake and a zoo filled with spider monkeys, pink flamingos and peacocks instead of horseback riding – has got to be the best deal in town: free if you make the cut. I can’t help but be intensely curious about life in the Mansion. Hef is happy to expound.
What is the regular schedule around here? On Wednesdays and Fridays, we go out dancing. On Fridays we have Casablanca movie night – which means we watch an old classic – and then another one on Saturdays. On Sundays, it’s new movie night and then on Mondays, we have manly night, which is a collection of friends. That’s when we pick a movie, usually a serial, maybe a musical short that we liked when we were kids. Every April, we watch Casablanca. We know every line and it’s a big night here. Afterwards, we go into the dining room, which is turned into Rick’s Café and have champagne and caviar.
Your game room is legendary. Do you spend a lot of time there? No. The game room was hottest in the ’70s and early ’80s. A lot of the games are from that time period. But I’m still a big game player. I’ll be playing Monopoly tonight with the girls. Every Sunday I play backgammon with a couple male friends.
Do you always win? HH: No. A game wouldn’t be interesting if you always won. It’s like life. Life wouldn’t be interesting if you always won.
Have you always been very ritualistic? You like things to happen in a very specific way. For a fellow who’s a rather free wheeling adventurer, a lot of structure has always been in my life. I like a certain amount of organization in terms of knowing what you’re going to do tomorrow.
Does it ever get boring? No – quite the contrary. If it were boring, I would do something different.
