Kate Hudson – What she’s really like.
By Anna David
Kate Hudson breezes into the house where her Cosmo interview will take place with the dramatic flair expected of a young starlet. She is dressed fashionably in a pair of brown Marni men’s style trousers and an off-white blouse, her enviable blond waves are free-flowing and her billion-watt smile is beaming. What’s not expected is what she’s carrying – a home-baked apple-cheesecake pie. “It was the winning recipe in a magazine I read,” she reports, then hastens to say, “Oh, no, are you going to write that? It’s so embarrassing.”
That’s quintessential Kate: disarmingly innocent and warm for a chick whose parents are Hollywood royalty and whose husband’s a rock star. But more on that later. She puts down the pie and scurries over to the couch to give her brother Oliver and this Cosmoreporter a hug, even though we’ve never met. It’s clear she’s at ease here (after all, it’s her mom Goldie Hawn and longtime partner Kurt Russell’s home) as she chitchats about how expensive it is to buy a home in northern California and waxes poetic about ’70s rock – a topic she’s frighteningly well-versed in. Talking with Kate, it’s easy to forget that the 5-foot-6, 23 year-old stunner is one of the world’s most sought-after young actresses.
Her agenda for the night? Aside from talking to Cosmo, it’s watching her favorite show -24. “I love 24, I love 24, I love 24,” she chants. “When I was little, I had such a crush on Kiefer Sutherland. I had a Lost Boys poster on my wall. I met him once when I was at a hamburger joint with my dad. I don’t know if Kiefer remembers. I should never be talking about this,” she says, suddenly realizing how schoolgirlish she sounds gushing over her kid crush. Read on for all the other fun topics Kate should never be talking about…but does.
Famous Family Ties
Kate has no reservations about discussing her tight-knit family, which includes Goldie; Kurt; Oliver, 26; Kate’s half brother Wyatt, 16, who is Kurt and Goldie’s son; and Boston, 23, who is Russell’s son with actress Season Hubley. (Kate’s father, Bill Hudson and Goldie divorced in 1982; when Kate says Dad, she’s referring to Kurt, whom Goldie met in 1983.)
The brood divided their time between Los Angeles and Colorado, and Goldie and Kurt arranged their busy work schedules so that at least one of them could be home with the kids at all times. Kate and Oliver are so close that they can finish one another’s sentences…and do. “Name some products you like during the interview so that companies send you stuff for free,” advises Oliver with a grin. Kate rolls her eyes and jokingly calls him a butt hole before shirking his suggestion. She’s used to handling guy behavior. “I grew up with like a thousand boys running through the house,” she says. “I wasn’t a girl’s girl. I had a few girlfriends but mostly guy friends.”
